Children attend the Dreams Come True event at the United Nations Pavilion

The Vice President of a major Chinese Group of companies has highlighted stable community partnerships as the basis for corporate volunteer efforts.

Speaking at the United Nations Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo, Li Xiao, Vice President of the TICO Digital Group, said he hoped that the United Nations Corporate Responsibility Forum, dubbed “Dreams Come True”, would bring companies responsible for vulnerable individuals together to discuss how corporations could contribute to their well-being.

The Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Pascal Lamy, has said that his organisation is committed to working with all UN agencies to successfully achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Speaking at the United Nations Pavilion at the Shanghai world Expo, Lamy said that a strong, harmonious and cooperative effort was needed if the international community were to face global challenges.

Actor Xia Yu leads a 'flashmob' outside the United Nations Pavilion

Chinese actor, Xia Yu, has called on people to adopt a philosophy of “environmental protection for the next generation”.

The actor was speaking at a closing ceremony for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) film series in the United Nations Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo where he participated in an open forum titled “Urban Biodiversity – Ecological City”.

UN Commissioner General Awni Behnam addresses the Daimler Sustainability Forum on corporate social responsibility

The Commissioner General for the United Nations Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo, Awni Behnam, has said that one of the basic necessities for democratic societies is free movemenr of trade, services, capital and information technology.

“However,” he continued, “Such a system needs to be tempered by a moral and ethical underpinning that is just and equitable through transparent governance with a healthy respect for sustainability and protection of common goods and ingrained in corporate social responsibility.”

United Nations Pavilion Commissioner General Awni Behnam awards visitor number 1 million with a trip to New York

The United Nations Pavilion celebrated visitor number 1 million this morning.

When an 18-year old high school student from Hebei Handan visited the United Nations Pavilion just after 10am, she had little idea she was about to be the one millionth visitor to the Pavilion since it opened 82 days ago.

Youth join hands on climate change at UN Pavilion

Speakers at the International Youth Summit on Energy and Climate Change

More than 200 young people from around the world have met in China to debate climate change as a starting point for the development of a youth approach to a low-carbon future.

The second “International Youth Summit on Energy and Climate Change” (IYSECC) opened at the United Nations Pavilion of Shanghai World Expo with “Low-carbon Vision, Youth Sailing” as its theme. The participants will work with experts in related fields, officials and business people to discuss international climate change issues and concerns.

Vice-President of the All China Federation of Trade Unions, Ni Jianmin, has said that the key to promoting gender equality in the workplace is worker education.

The comments were made at a joint seminar between the All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) held in the United Nations Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo. ILO Director of Gender Equality, Jane Hodges and ILO Expect on Gender Equality, Angelika Muller also participated in the seminar.

In collaboration with the Qatar Pavilion, the UN has hosted orphans of the Yushu earthquake in Qinghai Province, China, at its Pavilion at the World Expo.

Aged between 10 and 14, the children were sponsored by the Chinese Children’s Foundation, Qinghai Province Women’s Federation and the Heng Yuan Group “Constant Love Action” to witness the spectacular World Expo while in Shanghai.

Key Chinese and international academics have opened a three day forum to discuss the future of Chongming Island.

Former United Nations Under-Secretary General and Former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Klaus Toepfer and Professor Chen Jiyu Academician of the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research at East China University offered advice and suggestions for the eco-island. Domestic and foreign experts will be invited to further analyze the low carbon development of Chongming Island.
